Research shows that just 14% of the female population play golf. To help improve this number, existing members of clubs and regular players are being advised to bring along friends, families or anyone they know to their local clubs.

How is it being addressed?

There are free taster sessions being offered by clubs, centres and professionals across the country. New participants can search on the National Golf Month website for information and where the sessions are being held.

National Golf Month are also asking anyone who participates to use the hashtag #GirlsGetGolfing on social media so they can share their experiences.

Why try golf?

The main aim of the project is to obviously increase participation. However, National Golf Month are doing this by highlighting the health benefits that golf can bring to your life.

It is estimated that playing 18 holes can burn anything between 500 and 2500 calories.

There are also social elements that can help improve your social well being when playing golf.

Research has shown that playing golf can help decrease the likely hood of depression and anxiety by releasing mood-enhancing endorphins.

The importance of women in golf

National Golf Month say: “It is essential for the economic health and reputation of the sport that we encourage even more women to get onto the nation’s golf courses and driving ranges.

“This is the reason why we have decided to focus this year’s National Golf Month on encouraging women who are new to the game to try the sport and persuading lapsed female players to revisit their local course, club or centre.”

Who is backing the campaign?

A host of celebrities are backing the campaign including Ladies European Tour stars Charley Hull and Mel Reid as well as BBC presenters Dan Walker and Naga Munchetty.
