The four-shot penalty that Lexi Thompson was slammed with at the ANA Inspiration is slowly becoming a distant memory, she says, after winning the Kingsmill Championship by five shots.

This was her third start since the horror show at Mission Hills and she broke the tournament record, previously held by Annika Sorenstam, by a shot at 20 under. The 22-year-old closed with a 65, her third six-under effort of the week.

”I’m so over that. It is in the past. It’s unfortunate what happened but it’s time to move on and this puts a lid on it,” she said.

This was Thompson’s eighth victory and her fifth season on the trot with a W next to her name.

Thompson finished the tournament with just two bogeys, both on the par-3 17th hole.

”Today I was a little off off the tee and kind of steered it around the course, but I’m not complaining with a 65, that’s for sure,” she added. ”I just felt very in control of my game and a lot more relaxed in between shots and my caddy was a big help with that.”

World No 1 Lydia Ko began the day five off the lead but was round in 73 to tie for 10th – bizarrely she still hasn’t won since last July.

Mark Townsend

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game

Handicap: 8
