Becky Brewerton: Exciting times are ahead for our Tour
A new season, hopefully some better fortunes on the course and the Ladies’ European Tour schedule looks great for another year.
There is plenty of optimism about the future of the LET, we have kept all the tournaments from last year and that was the number one goal – I have heard there might be two extra tournaments which are on the players’ schedule but haven’t been confirmed yet.
I don’t remember a time when the membership have been as happy with what is going on The chief executive, Ivan Khodabakhsh, gave a good speech to all the players in Dubai and explained what we’re trying to do and change things a little bit, I don’t remember a time when the membership have been as happy with what is going on.
He was explaining his vision of where we’re going to go and making sure that the promoters and sponsors are happy. That means getting the players more involved in our home countries and getting paired up with celebrities and sports people from that country to promote the tournament.
A few players have been talking about some sort of season-ending format like the men do. The event in Dubai is our second biggest, after the British Open, not just in terms of prize money but in the scale of it. Everything about it is top notch and that could be a great place for an end-of-season finale. If we could get another couple of events in that part of the world then it could work really well.
Suzann Pettersen won the Money List after winning the Evian so she waltzed to the title. We used to have a points system whereas now if you win the Evian or British then you will top the list. This year it should have been Lee-Anne Pace, she won three times and didn’t seem to be out the top 10 and it would look a lot better if a regular player had come out on top.
One player to watch this year would be Marion Ricordeau of France who I have played with a few times. I have also been impressed with England’s Emily Taylor who hits the ball great.
The big success story of 2013 was Charley Hull, she made the biggest contribution which is incredible for a rookie. I can’t remember so many articles and TV pieces about an LET player which is great news.
She won the Rookie of the Year and she was very quick to heap praise on Holly Clyburn rather than talk about herself which was lovely. She plays with a real freedom and is a great reminder of why we all started playing in the first place.
