Golfers to break 60

We take a look at the golfers that have managed to break 60 and hit that magical score of 59, this list counts down the best ones that we’ve seen on Tour.

8. Justin Thomas 2017 Sony Open in Hawaii

Fresh off his win at the Tournament of Champions last week, Justin Thomas’ first round at the Waialae Country Club saw him become only the seventh man in history to shoot a score of 59.

Chipping in for eagle on the first set Thomas off on his way out in 29 which included five birdies and a bogey.

After a further three birdies at the start of his back nine, Thomas stood in the bunker on the Par 5 18th needing eagle to make history.

A clean and pure 5 iron left a 15 feet putt for eagle, the 23 year-old was not going to miss, knocking the ball into the middle of the hole to become the youngest player to join the club.

7. Annika Sorenstam 2001 Standard Register Ping

In the second round at the Moon Valley Country Club, Annika Sorenstam shot the lowest round in LPGA history, becoming the first woman in history to break 60.

Her round included 13 birdies and no bogeys whilst hitting every green in regulation and only missing one fairway in a near perfect round.

Shooting 69 and 68 in the final two rounds, she defeated Se Ri Pak by two shots to pick up her 25th LPGA tour victory.

6. Chip Beck – 1991 Las Vegas Invitational

Charles Henry ‘Chip’ Beck became the second man in PGA Tour history to shoot a round of 59 when he played his third round at the Sunrise Golf Course in 1991.

A course that wasn’t designed for tournament golf with perfect greens, near enough no rough and not a blow of wind in the air will mean critics won’t see Chip’s feat as impressive as others who are in the prestigious ’59 club’.

Although shooting 13 birdies is still an amazing achievement, but Beck’s 29 under-par score was only enough for a tied third place finish in the Nevada desert.

5. Jim Furyk – 2013 BMW Championship

With winds of up to 25mph along with dry and fast-paced greens it seemed that a low score on the Friday at Conway Farms Golf Club in 2013 was not on the cards.

However, when Jim Furyk hit 11 birdies, one eagle and one bogey to card an 11 under- par 59 to become only the sixth man to hit 59 on the PGA Tour he shocked all in attendance at the Illinois course.

Fellow American and Furyk’s playing partner for the day Gary Woodland could only stand and admire simply describing the round as “The greatest round I’ve ever seen”.

Unfortunately for the 2003 US Open winner, a 69 and a 71 over the weekend meant a third-place finish three behind Zach Johnson.
