Ask Emma: Is custom-fitting worth it?
CUSTOM-FITTING? YOU’RE WORTH IT
Dear Emma,
All my friends rave about custom-fitting but I don’t think I’m good enough to warrant a visit. I play off 28 and am very inconsistent so how could it help me?
Susan, Oxfordshire
Emma: You are worth it! Look at it this way; the best golfers in the world who can play with any clubs get theirs custom-fit to give them an edge over the competition.
We are all different shapes and sizes so it makes sense that we need different lengths, lies, lofts and flexes of shafts.
Find your local reputable custom-fitter, they will talk you through the whole process and be able to provide you with evidence that clubs custom-fit to you will be of great benefit. If you’re still unsure there is no obligation to buy.
DON’T FORGET THE PROFESSIONALS
Dear Emma,
I want to support my local pro when buying clubs and clothes but I can find everything cheaper online. So when I have lessons, in my new clothes and with my shiny new driver, I feel uncomfortable.
Emily, Stafford
Emma: Do not feel guilty at all. It’s your hard-earned money and you get to choose where you spend it.
Gone are the days when a pro could sit on their laurels knowing they had no competition for your money. As a trained professional they can provide you with the best advice and service when it comes to buying the right golfing equipment.
They may not be able to cater to all your tastes with regards to clothes but do consider them when making your next equipment purchase.
STAYING CONFIDENT AT TEE TIME
Dear Emma,
I’ve been a member of my club for two years yet still feel so anxious about the first tee shot. It’s right in front of the clubhouse and everyone can see what is happening – any tips?
Helen, Dorset
Emma: I have some good news and some bad news for you, Helen.
The good news is that no-one actually cares about your first tee shot apart from you! It’s very easy to think that everyone does but I promise you they don’t, they are far too concerned with their own game.
Ask yourself how much and for how long you think about your playing partners’ first tee shot. The answer is you don’t. The bad news is you are letting these nerves ruin your chances of hitting a good shot.
A solid preshot routine would help to ease some of the tension you feel and put your focus firmly on the task at hand. You only get one go at it so you may as well just go for it!
