Lancashire’s Catherine Roberts and Suffolk’s Alice Barlow are the pride of their counties. They have become the first winners of the new English women and girls’ county champion of champions’ tournament.

Roberts, of Pleasington, took the women’s crown in dramatic style on Woodhall Spa’s Bracken course – holing a 25-foot putt on the 18th for a one over 73. That edged her past Cornwall’s Georgia Price, who had just chipped in herself for a birdie, and Dorset’s Melissa McMahon. Both recorded 74s.

“It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever won and it’s great for Lancashire and my club,” said Roberts, who became county champion for the third time this year.

Barlow, of Newton Green, fi red a 76, which was enough to finish a shot ahead of Devon’s Chloe Howard and Oxfordshire’s Amy Boote. It’s the biggest win of her fledgling career and sees the 17-year old leave the junior ranks in style.
