Festival will celebrate grassroots golf
A week-long festival is being staged by England Golf next week to celebrate handicap and team golf.
The event gets underway at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire on Monday and is the first Golf Week hosted by the governing body for amateur golf.
‘We are looking forward to a wonderful week’ It will showcase a host of national finals for club golfers and James Crampton, the England Golf championship director, said: “We are looking forward to a wonderful week which will celebrate grassroots golf. Frilford Heath is an excellent venue and their support for this new venture will help to make it a great success.”
Highlights of the week include:
- The Final of the Junior Champion Club competition, which brings together teams of young representatives of each county in a 35-hole Stableford event. This takes place on the Green course on Monday and Tuesday, August 10 and 11.
- The final of the England Golf Captains’ tournament series, on the Red course on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11 and 12.
- The Women’s Grand Medal Final, contested by 60 qualifiers from six regional events for the country’s best club medal players. This takes place on the Red course on Thursday, August 13.
- The Fuller’s London Pride Gold Medal, contested by 63 club handicap golfers who have qualified for the final on the Red course on Friday, August 14.
- The final of the new Club Team Championship will take place on the Blue course on Friday, August 14. Twenty-five teams, each of two men and two women, have come through qualifying rounds and will play for the title.
The week also includes an annual invitational event for county presidents and secretaries and a competition for the club managers and captains of clubs hosting England Golf events.
