Teenage international Lizzie Prior pulled off a wire-to-wire victory in the girls’ championship at the weather-hit Fairhaven Trophies in Lancashire.

“I was gunning for a win, but it’s a lot nicer to know I started in the lead and ended in the lead – that’s definitely an achievement for me,” said Prior, from Burhill in Surrey.

A five-under par score over 54 holes was enough to give Prior a three-shot winning margin.

England also retained the Nations Cup, thanks to Hollie Muse, of West Lancashire, Toby Briggs, of Dunston Hall, and George Gardner, of Castle Royle, who won by four shots from Ireland.
”I was gunning for a win, but it’s nice to know I started and ended in the lead’ Lauren Hillier wins Monmouthshire County Championship

The Monmouthshire Ladies County Championship was contested by 93 golfers battling for the top prize.

With defending champion Jessica Evans of Newport absent from the tournament due to a wrist injury, the competition was guaranteed to see a new player claim the trophy.

The competition was fierce, with nine of the competitors having represented Wales at various levels from under 14 up to senior status.

At Monthmouth, Lauren Hillier of Newport cruised to the final after defeating Dawn Towell, Eleanor Willis and Wales senior international Chris Harries. In the final she overcame Rhiannon Thomas to secure her fourth championship success.

The Bronze division was won by Diane Pollard of Dewstow while the St Pierre quartet of Eleanor Willis, Rhiannon Thomas, Angharad Evans and Jo Harris won the team competition.

Cowlard crowned Cheshire champion

Reddish Vale assistant Abbie Cowlard has been crowned Cheshire ladies golf champion after a victory at Delamere Forest.

Cowlard, 20, has seen her handicap cut from three to 1.5 after also winning the prize for the best scratch round. Her 67 score included seven birdies and an eagle.

Coach Andrew Mylers has worked with Cowlard for seven years. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News he said: “I am so proud of her. Although an excellent player, Abbie had never previously had a round where she fulfilled her potential.

“I have taught Abbie since the age of 13 so it is extremely rewarding as a coach to see all her time and effort pay off.”

In the final Cowlard, who also plays at Stockport, beat Poppy Finlay from Vicars Cross.
