Lydia Ko's sacked caddie hits out: 'She needs to wake up'
Lydia Ko has become one of the major forces in the women’s game having won 14 LPGA events at the age of 19-years-old and she has been going through some changes since the end of last season.
The world No. 1 set about some changes for 2017 by changing her caddie and her coach, but after just nine events with Gerry Matthews on the bag she is searching for a new caddie again.
Matthews was part of Ko’s overhaul of her team as she dismissed her then caddie Jason Hamilton and former coach David Leadbetter.
Hamilton had been alongside Ko for 10 of her victories before Matthews took over. The latter has had some strong words for the 19-year-old who has gone through nine caddies in the last three years.
“I wish her the best, but she’s gone through so many caddies, she needs to wake up on caddie-player relationship, otherwise she’ll just keep doing it.”
Matthews added: “What was so strange for me, we worked unbelievably well in Hawaii [at the Lotte Championship], the communication and everything was just phenomenal.”
This isn’t the first time that one of Ko’s former employers has spoken out. Former coach Leadbetter believes that she needs to stop being influenced by the people around her as he was dismissed in December last year.
